Cytokine monitoring for kidney inflammation

The state-of-the-art research and facilities at Imperial College Kidney and Transplant Institute are helping companies treat inflammation of the kidneys.

Dr Frederick Tam and his team at Hammersmith Hospital are world class experts in glomerulonephritis, inflammation of the kidneys, and diabetic nephropathy.

They’ve studied the mechanisms of kidney inflammation to understand how monitoring the presence of the cytokine MCP-1 in urine can indicate kidney health.

Traditional methods of diagnosis for kidney disease, including testing urine and blood samples, are often not sensitive or specific for kidney inflammation and often only show up in the late stages. The novel test developed at Imperial is much more sensitive to kidney inflammation than traditional tests, often indicating kidney inflammation before any symptoms appear. It’s also non-invasive and more accurate, showing up borderline cases more clearly and measuring the response to treatment.

Imperial’s expert knowledge of kidney inflammation mechanisms has helped pharmaceutical companies address problems such as which biologics or small molecule inhibitors to take to human trials.

Combining experience working with industry and cutting edge research, Imperial Consultants can offer organisations a confidential and professional specialist service including:

  • Pre-clinical development to demonstrate which antibody to take to human trials
  • Streamlining the drug development process
  • Effective animal models to demonstrate if a drug works
  • Demonstration and advice on mechanisms for other areas where a drug may be effective
  • Advice on targeting the kidney as a therapeutic market
  • Expertise from cell culture to patient observation studies
  • Fully-equipped, newly-built labs
