Case study: BLOWDOWN - Simulating Emergency Blowdown of Hydrocarbons

The ability to depressurise or blow down is key to the safe operation of any high-pressure system. It is vital to be able to choose an appropriate blowdown strategy and select suitable materials of construction. Imperial College is at the forefront of blowdown analysis.

Over the last twenty years, Stephen Richardson and Graham Saville have developed and refined their BLOWDOWN programme into an industry leader and indeed it remains the only validated way of simulating systems (up to and including complete platforms and terminals) where both gas and liquid phases are present. Imperial Consultants continues to facilitate the relationship between the College and industry by acting as Stephen and Graham's representatives for all BLOWDOWN related consultancy work.

How do we deliver this service?

For a start we manage all contractual and legal matters on their behalf and our extensive experience with contracts for commercial academic consultancy ensures that no undue risk is passed on to Stephen and Graham. Imperial Consultants carries a comprehensive insurance and assumes the liability for all contracts that we undertake. In addition we ensure the smooth administration of all BLOWDOWN projects by providing an individual contact within Imperial Consultants who will liaise with clients on Stephen and Graham’s behalf, dealing efficiently with any non-technical issues that may arise over the project’s lifetime. In short, we take the hassle out of commercial consultancy, ensuring that the administrative details are dealt with in a timely and professional manner so that Stephen and Graham are free to focus on their speciality - the task at hand.
