The Rector of Imperial College, Sir Keith O’Nions, met with President Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan in an Easter trip to China and Taiwan, whilst exploring deeper relationships between the College and countries. President Ma singled out Imperial’s Railway and Transport strategy Centre (RTSC) to say,
"Imperial could claim to have been instrumental in benchmarking and improving some 27 metro systems in countries across the world."
Well thought out transport systems are essential in areas of high population density. 1.6 million people travel on Taipei’s metro system every day and it has been effective in relieving some of the capital’s traffic congestion problems.
The RTSC is well known within the transport industry for its expertise in relation to the initiation, facilitation and management of multi-year international benchmarking projects. Over the past 20 years, it has established itself as a centre of research excellence, serving the railway industry on strategic, economic and technology issues in the UK and worldwide.
Academics working within the RTSC have taken on nearly 600 consultancy projects over the last 20 years, strengthening their position as strategic advisors to multiple transport organisations. With the support of Imperial Consultants, academics are able to use their expertise for the benefit of public transport systems throughout the world.
Sir Keith O’Nions trip also served to develop relationships with alumni and supporters from both Taiwan and China, resulting in an agreement to support more Taiwanese postgraduate and academic staff to undertake research at Imperial.
