The UK's transport system needs a radical change to be ready for a low-carbon economy
13 Oct 2010 The Grantham Institute for Climate Change published its second briefing paper entitled ‘Road transport technology and climate change mitigation’ yesterday.

The paper provides a technical review of the low carbon options available to a transport system that needs a radical change if the UK is to meet its target of an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Imperial’s expertise in transport and electric vehicles is world-class and the Energy Futures Lab acts as the focal point for all energy research at Imperial. Within the lab there are a number of specialised networks, including the Electric and Hybrid Vehicles network which launched yesterday to coincide with the briefing paper publication.

Through Imperial Consultants, the College’s expertise is accessible to organisations across the globe. Our consultants have worked on projects involving engine efficiency, electric cars and transport safety. The testing facilities at Imperial are also available to external organisations through Imperial Consultants, such as the turbocharging testing lab which is used by companies including Caterpillar and Mitsubish.

Dr David Howey, lead author of the paper, is a research associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and also works as a consultant in energy efficiency.

“Road transport makes a significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions across the world, with the UK having one of the poorer emissions track records in Europe. “ explains David.

Dr Ricardo Martinez-Botas, another author of the briefing paper and lead of the new network, adds “The move to low-carbon vehicles and accompany transition to alternative fuels and new transport infrastructures will require radical transformations to the current industry, markets and policy framework.”
