The Centre for Petroleum Studies at Imperial has one the largest concentrations of petroleum scientists and engineers in a UK university, many of whom are sought after as expert commentators on international issues. The Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology has an Energy Engineering group working towards a sustainable energy economy.

The Energy Futures Lab runs a multi-million pound project with Shell looking at extracting difficult hydrocarbons with minimal greenhouse gas release.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) expertise is also cutting-edge and industry-led, with a College centre for CCS and collaborations with Shell and Qatar Petroleum through the Qatar Carbonates and Carbon Storage Research Centre.
