From the engineering and physics departments, the academics associated with the Centre for Nuclear Engineering are world-class researchers. Projects cover areas including fuel fabrication and performance, waste performance, structural integrity, radiation transport and reactor physics, reactor thermal hydraulics, radio chemistry and geological repositories.
The centre has strong links with industry, establishing a University Technology Centre (UTC) with Rolls-Royce. The UTC provides a focal point for academics and Rolls-Royce staff to collaborate on new nuclear engineering research projects.
Computational modelling and evaluation is another area where Imperial’s expertise is used in the nuclear industry. The bespoke computational fluid dynamics code FETCH, developed at Imperial, is used for nuclear safety research.
The College also has the UK’s only civil nuclear reactor centre, based at Silwood Park in Berkshire. It provides neutron irradiation and multi-element analysis services as well as hands-on training.
