Biopharma

Biopharmaceutical and biotechnology research are both very strong at Imperial. Commercialisation of research is managed through Imperial Innovations, the sister company of Imperial Consultants.

Collaborations with industry are many and varied. Larger research projects, run through the Corporate Partnerships team, include exploring alternative uses for existing drugs with AstraZeneca and assessing the potential adverse side effects of therapeutics with Roche.

Integrated research between departments allows groups such as the Drug Discovery Centre to grow. The centre supports the transfer of academic research into commercial development and use by industry. In addition the Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation is developing novel approaches to the area by combining biology, medicine and engineering knowledge.

Research covers the fundamental understanding of protein complexes, drug delivery proteins, the nervous system, immunology, bioinformatics and glycobiology.

The state-of-the-art facilities include a genome sequencing centre, electron microscopes, NMR and x-ray crystallography.
